Wetland ecology · Nature-Based Solutions

Wetlands that clean water and work with nature.

Wems Solutions ApS is an independent, one-person consultancy in wetland ecology and management, led by Professor Emeritus Hans Brix. We specialise in engineered and natural treatment wetlands for water pollution control — Nature-Based Solutions backed by four decades of research.

What we do

Wetland expertise, from concept to working system

01

Wetland ecology & management

Scientific consultancy on the ecology, design and management of wetland systems — grounded in research and decades of field experience.

02

Treatment wetlands for water pollution control

Engineered and natural treatment wetlands (constructed wetlands) that remove pollutants from water and protect the receiving environment.

03

Nature-Based Solutions

Harnessing natural processes to manage water and improve the environment — sustainable solutions, from first concept to implementation.

04

Feasibility studies & supervision

Feasibility studies and on-site supervision of constructed wetland projects, in Denmark and internationally.

Track record

Trusted on wetland matters — locally and internationally

Wems has supervised many constructed wetland projects and carried out feasibility studies in Denmark and abroad.

Wems was also the main actor behind the Danish EPA guidelines for constructed wetland systems — work that continues to shape how treatment wetlands are planned and built.

About

One scientist, four decades of wetlands

Hans Brix

Principal · Professor Emeritus, Aarhus University

Wems Solutions ApS is a one-person consultancy — its work is the work of Hans Brix. For nearly four decades he has researched and taught wetland ecology and constructed wetlands, as Professor of Aquatic Biology at Aarhus University and now Professor Emeritus, and is internationally recognised as a pioneer in constructed wetlands for water pollution control and nature-based wastewater treatment.

He founded the IWA Specialist Group on Wetland Systems for Water Pollution Control in 1986 — now a key international platform in the field — has advised and led projects in more than 20 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, and has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers (h-index 77). He is ranked among the world's leading scholars in his domain.
