Wems advises on reed as a natural resource — its quality as thatching material, how to cultivate and harvest it sustainably, and its expanding range of bio-based applications.
Thatching reed quality
What makes reed durable on the roof — stem diameter, cutting height, lignin and silica content, salt exposure and uniformity. Wems has carried out several studies of thatching reed, including the quality of Danish reed.
Cultivation, harvesting & paludiculture
Extensive experience growing Phragmites — selecting superior clones, breeding for thatching quality, and cultivating reed as paludiculture (wet farming) on rewetted land for a sustainable harvest.
New bio-based uses
Beyond thatch, reed is a versatile raw material: carbon capture in rewetted reedbeds, biochar, bioenergy and biogas, pulp and fibre, water purification, and building and insulation materials.

Wems has supervised many constructed wetland projects and carried out feasibility studies in Denmark and abroad.
Wems was also the main actor behind the Danish EPA guidelines for constructed wetland systems — work that continues to shape how treatment wetlands are planned and built.

About
One scientist, four decades of wetlands
Hans Brix

Wems Solutions ApS is a one-person consultancy — its work is the work of Hans Brix. For nearly four decades he has researched and taught wetland ecology and constructed wetlands, as Professor of Aquatic Biology at Aarhus University and now Professor Emeritus, and is internationally recognised as a pioneer in constructed wetlands for water pollution control and nature-based wastewater treatment.
He founded the IWA Specialist Group on Wetland Systems for Water Pollution Control in 1986 — now a key international platform in the field — has advised and led projects in more than 20 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, and has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers (h-index 77). He is ranked among the world's leading scholars in his domain.
